Indonesia: Semen Indonesia looks to international markets

Amid prospects of disappointing revenue growth in the domestic market, Semen Indonesia is looking offshore to expand its sales figures. Newly appointed head of PT Semen Indonesia, Rizkan Chandra has said that he wants to raise the company’s sales outside of Indonesia from 5.2 per cent of revenue in 2015 to 10-15 per cent over the next three years. MI Cement Factory Ltd, based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has awarded Loesche the contract for the Munshigonj cement plant. The Munshigonj cement plant is a brownfield project. Cemex has completed the sale of its operations in Thailand and Bangladesh to Siam City Cement for some US$53m. These operations consist of an integrated cement works near Bangkok with a capacity of 0.6Mta and a grinding centre at Nagarangonj in Bangladesh with a capacity of 0.52Mta.

Bangladesh remains Vietnam's strongest export market

From January to April, Vietnam exported 5.99Mt of cement and clinker to Bangladesh, which remains Vietnam's largest export market with US$64.46m. The Philippines (US$58.47m), Taiwan (US$10.67m), Mozambique (US$9.9m), and Chile (US$9.72m) are also major importers of Vietnamese cement. Vietnam's cement consumption in these four months was also very positive reaching 18.85Mt, representing an increase of 117.4 per cent YoY.

Bangladesh’s cement sector attracted foreign direct investment (FDI) of US$31.3m in 2015, according to a Bangladesh Central Bank report. This figure is up 41.5 per cent from that of 2014. MI Cement Factory has set its sights on organic expansion through the construction of new capacity including its own clinker manufacturing plant over the next five years.
