Kenyan cement consumption grew 18 per cent in the half year ended June, driven by increased construction activities in the private sector that defied a surge in cement prices, according to Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS). Ethiopia has announced a new cement price regulation to tackle the rising cost of cement products in the country. According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, the factory selling price for a quintal (100kg) of cement will now be between ETB510-683.44 (US$9.50-12.74). East African Portland Cement (EAPCC) has started a process of selling land parcels to squatters who have been living on its Athi River property. The cement maker has made an offer to the squatters to pay KES100,000 (US$832.6) for a beacon certificate and another KES500,000 within a year to purchase a plot of land measuring 40ft by 80ft (12 x 24m). Bamburi Cement posts 88% drop in 1H profits

Kenya-based Bamburi Cement Ltd reported a profit of KES95m (US$0.79m) for the January-June 2022 period, 87.7 per cent down from KES776m in the 1H21. Worku Ayetenew, a wealthy Ethiopian investor, wants to build a US$1bn cement plant. A shortage of cement in the country due to a lack of production capacity has created a black market with prices that have been steadily rising.
