Cement sales in Brazil declined by 2.1 per cent to 5.257Mt in October 2023 when compared with October 2022, when sales reached 5.368Mt, according to the Brazilian cement association, SNIC. Votorantim Cimentos has posted revenue of BRL7.4bn (US$1.51bn) in the third quarter of 2023, down three per cent compared to the same period a year earlier. Polpaico suspends Quilicura grinding operations

Chile-based Cemento Polpaico will temporarily suspend operations at its grinding plant in Quilicura and transfer these to the Cerro Blanco plant in Til Til. Cement consumption in Argentina slipped by 0.6 per cent YoY in October 2023 to 1,125,049t from 1,131,509t in October 2022, reports the country’s cement association, AFCP. Cement consumption in Colombia declined 4.9 per cent to 1.131Mt in September 2023 from 1.19Mt in September 2022, according to DANE, the country’s statistics office. The Valle del Cauca market saw the largest contraction, by 18.8 per cent YoY, followed by Norte de Santander (-16.5 per cent), Caldas (-13.7 per cent) and Colima (-13.4 per cent). Cement demand in Chile fell by 13.9 per cent YoY to 251,901t in September 2023 from 292,714t in September 2022, according to the Chilean construction chamber, CChC. In the first nine months of 2023 the domestic market contracted by 9.3 per cent YoY to 2.578Mt from 2.841Mt in the 9M22.

Peru-based Cementos Pacasmayo has reported a revenue of PEN516.7m in the third quarter of 2023, a 6.7 per cent decline when compared with the 3Q22. CEMEX and waste management company Silverwoods are utilising by-pass dust (BPD) from the CEMEX Rugby cement plant for agricultural purposes, supporting the circular economy. Peru-based cement producer Unacem has reported an 11.6 per cent drop in cement production to 4.38Mt in the opening nine months of 2023. Clinker production over the same period declined 7.5 per cent to 4.3Mt. The Peruvian cement market contracted by 12 per cent to 1.063Mt in September 2023 from 1.21Mt in September 2022, according to the national cement association, ASOCEM.
