EPA calls for clearer visibility in Montana region, USA

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said that two cement plants in the Montana area need to invest in measures to improve visibility in wilderness areas and national parks. The EPA says upgrades are needed at Ash Grove’s cement plant near Montana City and Holcim’s cement plant near Three Forks as well as the Colstrip power plant. FCC is to delay the planned sale of its US-based Giant Cement Holding division while the Spanish construction major focuses on debt refinancing of Cements Portland Valderivvas, Dow Jones reports. A plan to burn tyres at GCC’s Rio Grande plant in Pueblo, Colorado, USA is nearing final approval. State air pollution regulators have issued a draft permit for GCC Rio Grande's proposal. The plant would use old tires piled up at the Midtown tire dump south of Fountain. According to the Pueblo Chieftain the state will hold a 30-day public comment period before issuing a final permit. Japan’s Taheiyo Cement plans to increase group operating profit by around JPY50bn (US$598.8m) in fiscal year 2014 (FY14), an increase of 90 per cent on its projection for the year ending March 31. Lafarge has shut down Kiln Line No 2 at its Joppa cement plant, Illinois, USA, citing the continued challenging economic environment as the reason for shutting down one of its two kilns. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for December 2011 were 4.8Mt. This was 16% higher than shipments in December 2010.Although sales continued a trend of increases begun in May, the exceptionally large increase in December was in part because of unexpectedly mild weather conditions. Mexican cement producer Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC) reported a 4.9 per cent YoY rise in full year consolidated net sales to MXP7197.4m, as it reported improvements in construction activity in its domestic and USA markets from 2Q11. Australian building materials producer Boral’s turnover in the six months to the end of December improved by 1.9% to AUD$2,433m (€1,976m) while the EBITDA declined by 11.9% to AUD$237m (€192m) and the trading profit falling by 26.9% to AUD$109m (€86m). The net interest charge is now on the way up again and it rose by 9.7% to AUD$34m (€27m) and the pre-tax profit fell by 35.9% to AUD$75m (€61m).
