The promise of carbon capture

13 August 2014, Published under Cement News

As cement companies consider ways to lower their CO2 emissions, carbon capture is expected to provide a key component of their efforts. While first-generation carbon capture technologies have been around for application in other sectors, the cement industry continues to look for an economical way to capture carbon that is also suitable for use in cement plants worldwide. UK carbon capture potential to 2013

05 February 2014, Published under Cement News

Pursuing CCS technology in the UK could create a new industry worth GBP15bn-GBP35bn by 2030, employing tens of thousands of people. It could also eventually cut energy bills and safeguard jobs in energy-intensive industries such as the cement sector, according to the study jointly published by the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC). The cost of meeting emissions targets in the UK is expected to rise by GBP30-40bn annually if CCS is not deplo...

Microalgae: the big fix?

17 September 2013, Published under Cement News

With the carbon capture and storage offering a limited solution in terms of curtailing atmospheric CO2 emissions, Cementos Argos has embarked on research to investigate the use of microalgae as carbon fixers and offer a sustainable solution to reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. CCS in the EU cement industry

10 September 2013, Published under Cement News

On 1 July 2013, the EU Zero Emissions Technology Platform (ZEP) – founded by the European Commission in 2005 to advise on research, policy and regulation for the promotion of carbon capture and storage (CCS) – published “CCS in EU energy-intensive industries”, a report on CCS in industries beyond the power sector. Emissions from the non-power sector made up 25 per cent of EU carbon emissions in 2010. CCS is for many of those industries the only available technology to cut emissions. The repo...

Norcem signs carbon capture project with Aker Solutions, Norway

17 May 2013, Published under Cement News

Aker Solutions has won a contract to test and study the capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from flue gas emitted by the cement industry. The award from Norcem, in cooperation with the European Cement Research Academy (ECRA) marks the first time technology to capture CO2 is used at a cement plant in Norway. Aker Solutions will perform long-term testing on the actual flue gas to select optimum chemical solvent for high content CO 2 flue gas at Norcem's plant in Brevik, Norway. Tests will b...

Taiwan: plenty of promise

20 March 2013, Published under Cement News

Taiwan cement consumption has been holding relatively firm since 2010 and despite a slight dip last year, is expected to show a steady performance in the years ahead. To increase capacity utilisation rates in a country with plenty of overcapacity, local producers have exported sizeable volumes. A better construction and investment outlook also offer plenty of optimism. By Chris Pei, Taiwan Cement Manufacturers' Association. Taiwan Cement's 8Mta Guangdong Yinde plant, China In 20...
