Leading from the front

18 March 2019, Published under Cement News

Following last year’s IPCC report on climate change, there has never been a greater urgency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors and geographies to limit global warming to 1.5˚C. Therefore, the built environment will need to fast-track to zero carbon. In India, the world’s second-biggest cement producer, three of the country’s major players – Dalmia Cement, Ambuja Cement and UltraTech Cement – are leading from the front. Cementi Rossi’s ORC solution

25 February 2019, Published under Cement News

Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology for waste heat recovery is a widely-proven technology for cement factories. A new tailored, turnkey ORC unit for Italian producer Cementi Rossi will feed about 30 per cent of its Pederobba plant’s needs, with higher efficiency, improved safety and lower environmental impact in mind. By Exergy, Italy. Exergy has designed a customised and compact ORC solution to convert approximately 15MWth into 3.5MWe of electrical energy at Cementi Rossi’s Ped...

The benefits of paper

12 February 2019, Published under Cement News

A comparative study by the Swedish research institute RISE on behalf of the European Paper Sack Research Group (ESG) has found that the carbon footprint of paper cement sacks is 2.5 times lower than the footprint of form-fill-seal polyethylene bags. By CEPI Eurokraft, Sweden, & Eurosac, France. Paper sacks have a significantly-smaller carbon footprint The study by RISE Innventia, commissioned by the European Paper Sack Research Group (a collaboration between CEPI Eurokraft and E...

Cyprus sets 24% reduction goal in greenhouse emissions by 2030

25 January 2019, Published under Cement News

The government of Cyprus has approved a draft National Plan for Energy and Climate to see a reduction of 24 per cent of greenhouse gases in the country by 2030, compared to levels emitted in 2005. However, this total excludes emissions from cement, electricity and pottery sectors. This compares to the EU's greenhouse emissions target of 40 per cent reduction by 2030. Currently the industrial sector only accounts for eight per cent of Cyprus' emissions. Vassiliko Cement is the only cement pl...

Finding a different kind of gold

14 January 2019, Published under Cement News

While coal had been the mainstay of PPC’s energy sources for decades, the company’s current energy policy has called for a steady replacement of the black gold with more sustainable energy sources. This provided the South African cement producer with the drive to introduce alternative fuels at its De Hoek plant in Western Cape. By PPC, South Africa. PPC’s energy policy seeks to replace increasing volumes of coal with alternative fuels Sustainability needs innovative thinking and...

Durability of composite cements with calcined clay

13 December 2018, Published under Cement News

Composite cements are clinker efficient and play an important role in reducing CO 2 emissions from cement manufacturing. To assure their correct application in concrete, their performance in concrete has to be demonstrated, especially with regard to durability under different concrete exposure conditions. As part of a long-term research programme, such cements made of different calcined clays were used in conventional concrete mixtures and tested for their resistance to carbonation, chlorid...

Carbon-neutral fuel launched at COP24

06 December 2018, Published under Cement News

NextFuel, a new carbon-neutral fuel that is made from elephant grass has been unveiled at the United Nation's COP24 climate summit in Poland. The fuel can be burnt at industrial facilities such as cement plants to replace fossil fuels and requires no infrastructure upgrades. Manufactured by Sweden-based NextFuel, the product of the same name is made by drying elephant grass and processing it in a sealed rotary drum where oxygen is removed before the material is densified and pressed in briq...
