 US Portland and blended cement demand up 5% in October 2018

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the USA and Puerto Rico rose by 5.2 per cent YoY to 9.9Mt in October 2018, according to the latest data from the US Geological Survey (USGS). The US’ largest consuming states were Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, which received a combined share of 36 per cent of total shipments. On the supply side, California, Missouri, Texas, Florida and Michigan were leading producing states, delivering around 39 per cent of domestic output.

Shipments for the first 10 months of 2018 saw a 3.4 per cent rise to 83.7Mt when compared with the 10M17.

Masonry cement deliveries advanced 7.7 per cent YoY to 234,000t in October 2018 with Florida, Texas, North Carolina, California and Georgia as leading consuming states. Demand in these five states accounted for about 57 per cent of total domestic consumption.

Shipments of masonry cement in the first 10 months of 2018 reached 2.09Mt, up slightly from the year-ago period.

Clinker production (excluding Puerto Rico) totalled 7.1Mt in October 2018, up 5.5 per cent when compared with October 2017. Output of clinker edged up slightly YoY for the 10M18 period to around 64Mt. Leading clinker-producing states were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.

Cement and clinker imports in October 2018 advanced 10.9 per cent YoY to 1.4Mt while in the 10M18 they reached 12.9Mt, up by 11.8 per cent YoY.
