USA: an economy and cement market at a crossroads

The US cement industry entered 2026 facing renewed uncertainty after shipments declined for a third consecutive year in 2025. While the broader economy has shown resilience, cooling labour markets, sticky inflation and cautious monetary policy have complicated the outlook. Although challenges persist in the near term, the foundation for a gradual recovery in cement demand is beginning to take shape. By Brian Schmidt, American Cement Association, USA
