Decarbonising the Latin American cement industry
Latin America, including the Caribbean, produced ~183Mt of cement in 2024. The region benefits from comparatively low clinker factors and increasingly low-carbon power systems, but deeper emissions reductions will require standards reform, reliable alternative-fuel supply chains, plant modernisation, electrification, and CO2 transport and storage infrastructure. The UREMA Research Unit of Colombia’s Universidad del Norte reviews the measures that can deliver today and the conditions required to make the next generation of decarbonisation projects bankable.
