Sharjah Cement Factory

Sharjah Cement Factory, part of Sharjah Cement & Industrial Development Co (SCIDC), is one of the leading cement producers in the Middle East. It is located 25km east of Sharjah City, close to Sharjah International Airport.

Commissioned in 1977, it’s integrated 4.27Mta cement plant has a clinker production capacity of 2.25Mta and consists of two pyro-process lines and four cement mills. The plant produces a wide range of products, including Portland cement, sulphate-resisting Portland cement, ground granulated blastfurnace slag, and API compliant oil well cements.

The plant is self-sufficient in power owing to a 40MW captive power plant, in addition to a waste heat recovery unit that was installed in 2015 and generates up to 9MW of electricity, resulting in an annual reduction of 70,000t of carbon emissions.

The company has also invested more than US$15m in the latest technologies to upgrade the plant’s use of alternative fuels. UAE-based waste management company, BEEAH group, supplies the cement plant with 73,000t of solid recovered fuel each year, generated from industrial and commercial waste. This enables Sharjah Cement Factory to replace more than 30 per cent of fossil fuels with alternative fuels, surpassing the minimum 10 per cent required by law. By 2024 the company aims to reach an alternative fuel utilisation rate of 50 per cent.

The plant also boasts the latest technologies to reduce SOx, NOx, dust and other emissions to levels far below the limits set by the Ministry of Environment.

The company has implemented a zero waste to landfill policy whereby all waste, including green waste, ash and other factory waste, is recycled. Meanwhile, under an agreement with Qatra Water Solutions, the entire plant uses zero fresh water, running instead on treated waste water.

SCIDC has acquired certification from leading international management systems, including ISO 9001 : 2015 (QMS), ISO 14001:2015 (EMS), ISO 45001:2018 (OHSAS) and ISO 50001:2018 (EnMS). Products confirm to a range of internationally recognised standards, including the BSI Kitemark (UK), Dubai Central Laboratory (UAE), BIS (India), API 10A and CE marking.

In collaboration with the Sharjah Municipality & Ministry of Environment, the company has also planted over 5000 trees within the plant campus to increase green foliage.
