UltraTech Cement - September 2013


A complaint filed by local villagers threatens to undermine UltraTech Cement’s recent purchase of the 4.8Mta Kutch cement plant from Jaiprakash Associates Ltd. The deal not only includes the plant, but also a 57.5MW captive power plant, limestone reserves of over 90 years at current capacity and a jetty at Sewagram. But a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed by villagers close to the plant who claim it has caused pollution to local grazing land and water supplies through the dumping of alkali dust. According to the Indian High Court of Gujarat, the US$598m deal will now depend on the outcome of the PIL.
