Semen Indonesia - March 2017


For Semen Indonesia, March has seen continuing protests against its new Rembang cement plant in Central Java. With its launch already delayed by a number of months due to complaints from local farmers, the company has agreed to postpone its opening until May or June while the issues are resolved. Local farmers fear the new works will compromise the quality of groundwater in the region. Semen Indonesia argues that it has offered a potential solution to this issue, as well as emphasising the role the new factory will play in providing jobs and boosting the local economy.
