Van Eeckhout invests in a Marseille joint venture

Ciments du Lacydon was formed earlier this year by the Sylvestre family, which is active in aggregates, and the Van Eeckhout family, which this summer agreed the sale of its VVM cement business to CRH.

Rudy Sylvestre has been named as chairman and the company is based at Maubec in the south of France, some 30km from Avignon. The company is establishing a cement terminal in the port of Marseille, where it intends to invest some €20m.

Lacydon is an old name for the port of Marseille. Most of the investments are expected to take place during the second half of 2012 and in 2013. However, the first shipment of cement was received earlier this month and consisted of 5350t of cement from Turkey.

Ciments du Lacydon aims to handle in excess of 300,000t in three years and to ship cement from the terminal using both inland and coastal shipping as well as over land. While initial imports will be of cement, the aim is to switch to the importation of clinker when the grinding facilities are completed in 2013.
