Colacem Canada plans to invest nearly CAD225m (US$221m) in a 3000tpd cement plant along Highway 17, Champlain, Quebec.

The new works will be located next to the quarry of Bertrand Construction, which joined Colacem Canada last January.

The firm estimates that the new plant wouild create 128 direct jobs and 82 indirect jobs and employ 90 truck drivers. The construction phase would also employ nearly 200 staff.

In terms of dust control, the plant would use a particulate filter as well as an electrostatic filter. All raw materials except coal, would be stored in an enclosed place. "We believe that emissions will be very very low, even lower than the new regulations," said Moreno Capolli, CEO of Colacem Canada.

The company recently organised an open house evening for the local community as part of its stakeholder consultancy. The next step will see the company conduct an environmental impact study. In addition, it must obtain regional and municipal government approval to rezone the land for commercial and industrial use. If approved, Colacem intends to start construction in 2012 and operations by early 2014.
