Argos completes purchase of Lafarge assets, USA

Colombia’s Cementos Argos has completed the US$76m purchase of a number of cement and ready-mix concrete assets from Lafarge having received approval from American competition authorities and complied with other necessary requirements.

The deal, first announced in May 2011, involves the acquisition of a 1.6Mta cement plant in Roberta, Alabama and a 1.1Mta a cement plant in Harleyville, South Carolina as well a 0.5Mta grinding plant in Atlanta, Georgia. The agreement also includes 79 ready-mix plants with an installed capacity of
3.3Mm3 located in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida, 347 ready mix trucks, five rail terminals (three in Georgia, one in Mississippi, and one in North Carolina) and a terminal with port facilities in Mobile, Alabama.

With this acquisition, Argos’ installed US capacity in the US would reach 3.2Mt of cement and about 10Mm3 of ready-mix concrete per year. It brings Argos’ total installed production capacity to 16Mta of cement and 14Mm3 of ready-mix concrete.

Furthermore, within the United States, the deal makes Argos the second largest cement producer in the southeast, the fourth largest ready-mix producer and a leader in the ready-mix market in Atlanta, Dallas and Houston, relevant urban centers in the south.
