Lafarge and Strabag on Thursday inaugurated a €270m cement plant in Királyegyháza (SW Hungary).

The plant has a capacity to produce 750,000t of clinker and 1Mta of cement and is expected to reach full capacity in 2-3 years.

Lafarge chairman Bruno Lafont said this new cement plant will inject an annual HUF2.5bn into the economy. Lafarge is considering exporting some of the plant’s output later.

Strabag chairman Hans Peter Haselsteiner said the companies had decided the investment was worthwhile even at a time when other industry players were avoiding capital expenditures.

Output from the new works is expected to mainly supply the Hungarian and Slovak markets.
