Holcim new plant decision tipped for early-2012, New Zealand
22 August 2011

Holcim NZ hopes a decision by its European parent on whether to go ahead with a new cement plant near Oamaru will be made by December or early next year.

The Christchurch-based company has previously said if it gets the go-ahead, the plant could be operating within about three years of a board approval. Holcim had in late 2009 received the required resource consents.

The Swiss parent yesterday told the New Zealand subsidiary there was no decision yet on the plant, but instructed it to keep working on the proposal, particularly to see if costings numbers "are correct".

Holcim NZ has decided that Weston, near Oamaru, is the preferred location for the plant, which would replace the outdated Westport Cement Works site at Cape Foulwind.
