Zambia: high-quality cement key to economic growth
06 July 2011

Zambezi Portland Cement Limited has called for high-quality products in the construction sector, which is key to the growth of the Zambian economy.

Company senior laboratory technician Boyd Chibuye said in an interview at the on-going Zimbabwe International Trade Fair that the construction industry required high-quality products that could sustain the infrastructure development which is being rolled out in various parts of the country.

Mr Chibuye said the Ndola-based firm was particular about quality and safeguarding the environment while at the same time ensuring that it produces sufficient cement for the market. “We’ve ensured that we conform to the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS). It is important in any venture to uphold high standards of products to sustain a huge market. In any case, customers would only flock to a company which is offering high-quality products,” he said. Cement produced at Zambezi Portland Cement conformed to 42.2N standards, he added.

Mr Chibuye said Zambezi Portland is happy to be associated with the construction of the Ndola stadium, a major government project being undertaken by the Chinese. “You are aware that one of the major projects we’ve are associated with is the Ndola stadium. Our cement was recommended as the best for such a huge project. So you see how we emphasise quality and quantity too,” he said.

In addition to supplying the domestic market, Zambezi Portland exports its product mainly to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in addition to a number of countries in southern Africa. Moreover, the company also exports cement to East Africa where it aims to establish itself before venturing into the Great Lakes Region.
