01 June 2011

The BUA Group is set to embark on the construction of a US$500m cement plant at Okpella community in Edo, Nigeria. When completed, the plant will have a capacity of 2.5Mta.

The Executive Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, announced at the contract signing ceremony for the building of the plant on Tuesday in Abuja that the building of the Edo Cement Plant would be completed in August, 2013. Nigerian press have reported that FLSmidth is the main equipment supplier for the plant. In a statement, FLSmidth has confirmed that the reports are correct but said it will inform the market if and when the contract is finalised and becomes binding.

The BUA Group entered the Nigerian cement market in 2008 when it was one of six companies granted a licence by the Federal government to import cement. The company then went on to successfully operate Nigeria’s first floating terminal, the BUA I. It then further strengthened its position in the Nigerian market by acquiring a majority shareholding in Cement Company of Northern Nigeria and Edo Cement Company.
