Akkord, Azerbaijan’s largest construction holding, will accelerate the construction of a new cement plant in 2011, according to company spokesman Afag Guliyeva. The decision is envisaged to put the implementation of the project back on track.

First launched as a project in 2007, the 1.2Mta cement plant will be build in Dash Salahli, Gazakh region. However, the project experienced some delays in getting the necessary equipment to the site but Guliyeva said that this are being resolved.

Azerbaijan’s national cement consumption currently stands at 3Mt, of which 1.3Mt is supplied by Garadagh Cement, the largest cement producer in the country. The company is owned 69.6% by Holcim and both the government-controlled Azerbaijan Investment Co and the EBRC have an additional 10% stake. Garadagh plans to replace its present wet-process lines by a single 1.7Mta dry-process line.
