Catalonia cement: opportunities for the industry
15 July 2010

Angel Cercós, of the employers association Català Ciment, sees the current downturn in cement demand as an opportunity for domestic producers to seek foreign markets, as well as diversification of the sector to new uses and applications of its product, including the use of more economical and environmentally-friendly concrete pavements compared to traditional asphalt pavements.

"The consumption of cement in Catalonia will never be the same. Yes, the factory, although one can make more cement for export or for areas such as Aragon and Valencia next," notes Joan Molins, president of Ciments Molins. "The export will act as a compensating factor of the thinning in the domestic sector," Portland Valderrivas sources insist, which attribute export leadership to its subsidiary Uniland. The company also insists on the importance of innovation to develop products that open new market segments with higher added value.
