Sugar Creek formally denied limestone mining expansion
15 September 2009

Sugar Creek Planning and Zoning Commission members have formally denied Lafarge Sugar Creek from expanding its limestone mining operations.

The Lafarge request included a zoning change and a special-use permit. The proposal died when the city’s Board of Aldermen said no to the zoning change.

But the Planning Commission, which had voted 6-3 against the zoning change, had not officially acted on the permit request. It did Thursday night, voting unanimously to deny it – with the stipulation that the issue should come back to the commission if aldermen should ever change their minds and approve the zoning change. Commission Chair Susan Davis suggested the commission could attach conditions to make things more palatable to all concerned. “In the interest of fairness, I think we all feel good,” she said after the vote.

The permit issue goes to the Board of Aldermen Monday.
