Cemex officials remain committed to expanding their 87-acre limestone quarry – the wellspring of the Davenport cement operation – despite recent economic setbacks for the manufacturer.

The company’s 10-year push to extend mining in the hills above Davenport, a proposal hung up by environmental study, is likely to get the go-ahead by county regulators this summer.

"The limited expansion supports opportunities for a local work force, earning good wages in union jobs. And it helps to ensure that the plant has enough limestone to continue producing the high quality cement," Cemex spokeswoman Jennifer Borgen wrote in an e-mail to the Sentinel.
