Quinn closes cement and quarry division for a month, Ireland
17 April 2009

The cement and quarry division of the Quinn Group in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan and Derrylyn, Co Fermanagh have had to place of the majority of their workers on temporary leave for a month.

A large number of Leitrim workers will be at home for the next four weeks after the group informed employees that both divisions will close down for the month as part of a cost saving plan.

The group have assured that all permanent jobs will be safe and work will recommence at both locations after the four week break is up.

The measures have been introduced because of the drop in building product sales due to the severe lack of construction in the country.

But this will not be the only break in employment for cement and quarry workers, as they have been told that another four week break is expected eight weeks after they return to work in May. It is reported that this sequence will be a frequent system until the end of the year.
