Lafarge modest growth, Morocco

The Moroccan arm of Lafarge is planning to inaugurate a second cement production line at its plant in Tetouan in May, bringing capacity up to 2Mta, following the completion of an upgrade to its Tangier plant in March, raising output to 1.2Mta.

Jean-Marie Schmitz, the chief executive of Lafarge Maroc, said that the company expected modest growth in cement demand in 2009, owing to the government’s commitment to pressing ahead with its housing construction programme.

However, the company noted a sharp slowdown in growth in the second half of 2008: its sales increased by 15.7% YoY in the first half of the year, but this tapered down to 1.5% in the second half, with overall growth for the year reaching 9.9%.
