Southern Africa monthly sales rise four per cent
09 April 2009

Regional industry sales for March 2009 grew by 4.0% compared to March 2008, but declined by 10.2% YoY on a sales per day basis.

This is an improvement on February’s 13.9% decline confirming that sales in February were negatively affected by high rainfall in most summer rainfall provinces. Limpopo, Namibia and Botswana continues to show year on year growth in March while the Western Cape remains significantly down.  Almost 9000t of clinker was imported in March.

For the period October 2008 to March 2009, demand from the construction sector grew by 12% confirming that infrastructure projects are ramping up their consumption of cement.

The provinces of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, which are predominantly bag markets, continue to display growth indicating that rural demand is interest rate insensitive.
