People against a proposed cement plant by Titan in Castle Hayne say they will not back down.

Carolinas Cement, a subsidiary of Titan America, wants to build a cement plant in New Hanover County, but there has been controversy over the environmental impacts of such a project.

Opponents of the plant protested outside the New Hanover County assembly room before the commissioners meeting Monday night.

"We want to give environmental agencies due process and enough time to get all the environmental impacts," opponent David Pinsky said.

Last year, county commissioners agreed on a US$4.2m tax incentive for Titan Cement in exchange for the jobs it would bring to the area. Commissioners said when it comes to enforcing environmental regulations, that’s up to state and federal governments.
