Holcim Romania has temporarily laid off nearly 60 workers from seven operating locations up north and in Bucharest, out of a national total of 1,400 employees, Holcim Romania CEO Markus Wirth told a press conference yesterday, Agerpres informs.

Holcim says in the first two months of 2009, building materials demand had plunged 30-40 per cent from the figures reported in the same period in 2008.

The Holcim representatives do not expect to temporarily lay off any more people in the coming period.

Holcim Romania had a turnover of EUR 372 M in 2008, 25 per cent higher than in 2007 and forecasts a worst case scenario where demand for building materials should drop by over 10 per cent in 2009, according to Markus Wirth.
