Essroc to mothball Lawrence County plant

Essroc Cement Corp. will mothball its Lawrence County plant in May, possibly closing the factory for good, according to Bizjounrals.com.

The Nazareth, Pa.-based cement manufacturer filed a WARN notice with the state March 2, stating that the layoffs of 113 employees may be permanent.

Essroc’s Bessemer site supplies cement to customers in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The company is North America’s largest cement producer by capacity.

Slumping construction starts have hit the cement industry hard in the last year, leading Essroc to close its Frederick, Md., facility in December, laying off 110.

Essroc, a subsidiary of Italy’s Italcementi Group , operates three other plants, in Indiana and West Virginia, as well as sites in Canada and Puerto Rico.
