Ground breaking ceremony for Athi River
26 August 2008

President Kibaki on Monday presided over the ground breaking ceremony of a new Sh3 billion cement manufacturing plant in Athi River, Kajiado District.

Speaking during the inauguration of the National Cement Company Limited, President Kibaki said his Government was encouraging private sector players to invest in cement manufacture so as to ensure availability of the commodity at an affordable cost to the people.

“I’m particularly pleased to see that over the last few months we have received, and are processing requests from a number of investors interested in the manufacture of cement.

“My Government welcomes the competition, which will ensure that the commodity will be competitively priced,” the Head of State said.

When completed, the new project will have an initial production capacity of 1000tpd, with provision for further increase to 2500tpd and almost 1Mta.
