UltraTech Cement, a member of India’s Aditya Birla Group, has announced plans to invest Rs30bn (US$748.8m) in a new cement project at Mahuva, Gujarat. The project will include a cement plant with an annual production capacity of around 3.5Mt and a 60MW power plant. UltraTech’s capacity stood at around 17Mt in the 2007/08 fiscal year, of which around 2.5Mt was exported. The company plans to open nearly 200 additional domestic retail outlets this year, helping to compensate for a recent government ban on cement exports.
