Holcim recalls 130,000 bags of cement

Cement manufacturer Holcim Philippines recalled some 130,000 bags of cement from the market, the local Trade office said Friday.

Robert Barlis, chief of the Consumer and Welfare and Trade Regulation Division of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), said Holcim was recalling cement products under its Excel brand, which were manufactured between Feb. 2 and 4.

"This batch of cement bags was found to have low strength development and may be unsuitable for load-bearing concrete such as posts and beams," a Holcim announcement confirmed.

Holcim said the problem was traced to the bogging down of the X-Ray machine for chemical analysis at its plant here.

Holcim said it has already managed to recall some 50,000 bags.
