Cimpor investment projects in Tunisia and Jordan

Cimpor investment projects in Tunisia and Jordan
25 February 2008

Cimpor is planning a 50% increase in clinker capacity at Ciments de Jbel Oust in two stages. On the final completion of the project, expected in 2010 or thereabout, the cement capacity, using own clinker, should be raised from the present 1.6Mt to 2.4Mta.

The timing of this project is very similar to the EUR100m investment in a 0.75Mta greenfield plant being built in the Meknès region of Morocco.

Cimpor is currently at an advanced stage in investigating the possibilities of building an integrated cement plant in Jordan.  This is interesting in that there is presently only one producer of grey cement in Jordan, Jordan Cement Factories Co, which is effectively controlled by Lafarge through a 48.2% stake.

However, there are at least three cement projects at the planning stage, which, in they are realised would considerably change the competitive position in the country.

The result of the tender offer for a further 20% of Shree Digvijay Cement in India, where Cimpor has already agreed to take a 53.6% stake, should be known by the end of this month.  In addition, Cimpor has committed itself to considerable investments in new cement capacity in China and in Peru.
