No cement scarcity in Nigeria, says Dangote

There is no scarcity of cement in Nigeria and there is enough supply to handle the highest demand push possible, the nation’s largest cement supplier, Dangote Group has said.

The Group Managing Director, Dangote Cement, Mr. Knut Ulvmoen who addressed the press in Lagos yesterday said the high price of cement currently being witnessed is not as a result of scarcity but high cost of production, transportation and other infrastructural deficiency.

According to him “the local producers are capable of supplying large quantity of cement if proper incentives are given to them. The local producers are not afraid of competition from importers, what we are saying is that there should be a level playing field for all players in the market.

“A situation where some people like Ibeto Cement are giving concession than  others is not acceptable. The government policy on cement must be strictly adhered to. If any person must import cement into the country, he or she should be ready to produce locally.  That is the policy in place. Given importers concession is detrimental to local producers”, he said.
