The Azerbaijani government has made proposal for France’s Lafarge on the
occasion of a raw materials site for construction of a new cement factory.
Heydar Babayev, the minister for economic development of Azerbaijan, said
that they could find a field to provide Lafarge with raw materials for the
next 20 years.

“It will be a deposit either in Garadagh district of Baku or neighboring
Gobustan district (most likely the second option) as the French did not
agree to invest in remote regions. Now Azerbaijan Investment Company (AIC)
is going to apply for allotting of the deposit,” Babayev said.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding for the project signed on December 28,
2006 between Lafarge, Ministry of Economic Development and Azerbaijan
Investment Company, cement factory’s capacity will make 1-1.5Mta of cement.
