Romania’s large cement makers will have to double production
21 March 2007

Romania’s major cement makers will have to double production capacities to cope with the spectacular rise in the internal demand, which follows the trend of the construction market.

The estimates say the cement market may reach in 14Mt in 2011 versus 7.7Mt in 2006.

Bogdan Arnautu, communication director with  Carpatcement Holding, the Romanian subsidiary of  HeidelbergCement, says the cement market rose in 2006 by some 26% to 7.7Mt, by 1.6Mt more than in 2005. The company’s officials say the cement market rose by over 50% in the 2004-2006 period, and if investments are not made, there is the risk for the demand not to be met on short periods, especially in summertime.

The construction market may rise in the next five years by an annual growth rate of 12-15%, says Mihai Rohan, director general of  Carpatcement.

Markus Wirth, director general of Holcim Romania, says the development of his company followed the ascending trend of the construction materials market. The turnover of Holcim rose from EUR166m in 2005 to EUR219m last year
