A man was crushed to death at the Lafarge Northfleet cement works, UK. The Polish national was carrying out routine maintenance work inside a kiln when a piece of refractory concrete fell on top of him. He died at the scene. Three other men who were working alongside him received minor injuries.

The kiln had been taken out of service so the work could be carried out, a spokeswoman for Lafarge Cement said.

The four men were wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and a safety-check had been carried out half an hour before the incident, she added. The man who died was employed by Lafarge Cement, while the others were contract workers.

The Lafarge Cement spokeswoman said: ’When they were inside replacing some of the lining of the kiln a piece of concrete fell and crushed one man. Three others were injured.

The company has launched an investigation and the Heath and Safety Executive has been informed.
