Cement manufacturer Essroc Corporation is planning to spend US$320m to revamp and expand its operations in Berkeley County.

Essroc Environmental Affairs Director Hector Ybanez says the company wants to replace two of three kilns on the 849 acre site just south of Martinsburg with one bigger kiln by 2008.

Steve Pursley is an engineer for the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Air Quality and reviewed the plans, which were permitted by the state in June 2005. A preliminary site plan was approved last week by the Berkeley County Planning Commission.

Essroc purchased the plant, formerly known as Capitol Cement, in 2002 and now employs 189 people there.
