25 September 2006

Indian National Cement Workers’ Federation (INCWF) has urged the state government to consider conversion of Tamil Nadu Cements Ltd’s Alangulam plant from wet to a dry process system, to reduce production costs.

In a letter to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, INCWF general secretary N Nanjappan said a majority of cement units have switched over to dry process, which has reduced the cost of production in fuel and maintenance.

The letter said the conversion would cut production cost by as much as Rs 1,100/t to Rs 1,300/t against the present Rs 2,400/t in the wet process.

He said the proposed conversion process would incur an investment of about Rs 250 crore in six years.

The association urged the state government to sanction the amount envisaged for the conversion process.
