Venezuela, Iran to set up cement plant in Carora
18 September 2006

Venezuela and Iran plan to jointly set up a cement plant in Carora, in the Venezuelan western state Lara, the Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, announced, after his meeting with the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadineyad, who is on an official visit in Venezuela.

The cement plant will be the second one, built with co-operation of the two countries, following the construction of a plant near Maturin, in the Venezuelan northern state Monagas. The cost and timing of the new project were not disclosed. The plant’s construction is encouraged by the high growth potential of the cement sector in Venezuela and the large number of public and private construction projects announced, especially the government-backed housing programmes. With the new facilities, Venezuela will also reduce its dependence on cement imports.
