Ultratech Cement shuts plants due to rains, India
10 August 2006

Ultratech Cement Ltd said it has stopped operations at its 0.70Mta grinding unit at Surat in India’s flood-hit western Gujarat state.

"The company is assessing the losses, if any, as a result of the shut down. Nevertheless, the company has made alternative arrangements for supplying (cement to) the markets," Ultratech said in a statement to the National Stock Exchange.

The plant was shut down following heavy rains and floods on Tuesday, the statement said.

Heavy rains in the last few days have caused floods in Tapi river that flows through south Gujarat, shutting off several industrial units in Surat and the nearby industrial town of Hazira.
