Ministry and industry to meet over price increases, Jamaica
27 July 2006

Finance and Planning Minister, Dr. Omar Davies and Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce Minister, Phillip Paulwell are scheduled to meet with the management of the Caribbean Cement Company Limited (CCCL), to register the government’s dissatisfaction concerning the recent increase in the price of cement.

This was noted by Information and Development Minister, Senator Colin Campbell, on July 24, at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.

Senator Campbell told journalists that during its sitting, "Cabinet expressed its alarm at this increase, which we believe to be insensitive at this particular time when there has been great instability in the cement supply situation".

The Minister said that while it was fully acknowledged that, "there is a free market operating in Jamaica.the Cabinet does have a very serious concern about the increase at this time".

An important point that would be raised at the meeting with the cement company, he added, was whether the price of imported cement from Cuba would be affected.

Cabinet also approved a $27.8m contract to Illuminat Jamaica to upgrade the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The scope of work to be carried out includes the installation of network infrastructure as well as the acquisition of the necessary computers to improve the performance and efficiency at the office of the DPP.
