Akçansa makes major Canakkale investment

With a proposed spend of US$135m, Turkish producer Akcansa will increase its clinker production capacity to 5.7Mt and its cement grinding capacity to 9Mt by end-2007.

This advance comes about by the decision to push ahead with a second line expansion at the Canakkale plant in Turkey which will increase the daily production capacity from 2Mta to 4Mta.

At the ground-breaking ceremony Akçansa’s board chairman Erhan Kamish has indicated that Akçansa is currently meeting nine per cent of Turkey’s cement demand and this latest investment will ensure that Akçansa will achieve its goal of becoming a strategic regional force.

Gülar Sabanci, sabanci holding’s Administrative Board Chairman said that Sabançi was pleased with the continuing partnership with HeidelbergCeement which has been on-going since 1996.

Dr Bernd Scheifele said that the investment decision in an expression of confidence we have in the future of the Turkish economy and the cement sector.
