CSE to release environmental scorecard

CSE to release environmental scorecard
12 December 2005

The Centre for Science and Environment(CSE) in India is preparing an environmental scorecard of the cement industry which poses many ecological challenges. The scorecard for the heavy weight industry, which is the country’s second-largest taxpayer, will be based on a complete life-cycle analysis - from sourcing of raw material to product disposal, CSE sources said here.

Mining is an important part of the process with impact on local ecology, land-use pattern and water resources. The industry is also a major green house gas emitter. All these aspects will be taken into account in the ratings that will cover 41 companies including the big names of the industry - Associated Cement
Corporation, Gujarat Ambuja, Grasim Industries and Ultra-tech limited, they said.
