08 December 2005

According to the Al-Bayan newspaper, Mr. Mohammed Shanef, Vice Chairman of the Yemen Corporation for Cement Industry and Marketing, revealed that his company is planning to increase its cement production capacity from current 1.8Mt annually to 5Mt annually by 2008. To achieve that goal, the Yemen Corporation for Cement Industry and Marketing is intending to expand the capacity of its current three cement manufacturing factories in Yemen.  He also estimates the cement consumption in Yemen at 4Mta. The official added that his company meets nearly half of this cement consumption.

Mohammed Shanef, also revealed that his company is planning to establish a cement sacks manufacturing factory in Yemen to put an end for the country’s cement sacks import. This plant will save Yemen up to US$6m, which is annually spent on cement sacks import. An international tender will be publicised in early 2006 for local and international investors to bid for executing this project. It will produce 50-70 million sacks annually.
