03 June 2004

NANA OWUSU Ansah, chairman of the GHACEM Cement Distributors Association in the Ashanti Region has advised block-makers, masons and other cement users to use the product correctly in order to ensure the quality and durability of their constructions.

He was speaking at a workshop on the correct usage of GHACEM Super Strength Portland Cement Class 42.5N organized by GHACEM Limited at the Miklin Hotel, Kumasi, last weekend.

The workshop, a follow-up to one held in Accra, was attended by masons, block-makers, contractors, architects, home-owners and students of building technology from the Kumasi Polytechnic.

In an address at the opening ceremony, Dr George Dawson-Ahmoah, Marketing Director of GHACEM, said the company had invested US$8m in its Tema and Takoradi plants in 2002 and that the investment led to the introduction of an improved product, the GHACEM Super Strength Portland Cement Class 42.5N.

To derive maximum benefit from the new product, it was imperative that it be applied correctly by all users.

The workshop therefore educated participants on aspects of that correct application. This included basic raw material technology; material selection, specification and measurement; manufacturing and curing process; basic actions to improve strength, durability and quality of sandcrete blocks; and concrete technology and mixes.

The Chairman of the function was Oheneba Adusei Poku, Akyempinhene of the Kumasi Traditional Area.

The team of resource persons included Mr J S Sam, Managing Director of Phastor Limited and two Senior Marketing Officers of GHACEM, Messrs Phillip Archer and Ernest Gbesemete.
