Having entered the Nevada market last November with the acquisition of Southern Nevada Paving, Aggregate Industries extended its interests in that area of the United States buy the purchase of Frehner Construction Company for US$95.8m. Significantly, Frehner Construction Company, which last year generated a turnover of US$168m and a pre-tax profit of US$1.1m, owns the other 50% of the large Sloan Mountain quarry near Las Vegas with reserves amounting to some 600m tonnes of limestone. Through its purchase of Southern Nevada Paving, Aggregate Industries had already acquired the other half. In addition, Frehner Construction Company operates two smaller quarries in Nevada and has four fixed and four mobile asphalt plants in the states of Nevada and Utah. With full control of the Sloan Mountain quarry, Aggregate Industries will be in a better position to market its stone further afield, notably into eastern California, a state that is short of reserves, largely because of a restrictive planning regime.
