India – Shree Cement plans fuel recycling plants

Shree Cement is planning to set up mini-fuel recycling plants with assistance of German equipment supplier KHD Humboldt GmbH. The plans come within the framework of a major cost-cutting drive in its fuel expenditure. M K Singhi, executive director at the Indian cement company commented: One of the main factors for worry for cement manufacturers in India is high fuel costs.

The use of recycled fuels should bring savings of four to five per cent off fuel costs. The new project will use biodegradable wastes, fodders, municipal and industrial wastes to generate low-cost fuel, starting in the early months of 2004.

Shree Cement has positioned itself to be one of the most fuel-efficient companies in India by promoting environment-friendly fuels, pushing energy consumption down to 4.15 per cent in the previous year. The company has been the first to use recycled petcoke and as a result, was able to post savings of Rs32.33 crore during 2002-03.
