Holcim Malaysia has called for green building certification to be made mandatory as it would create sustainable development in all sectors and ensure more responsible construction materials and practices by the industry.

CEO of Holcim Malaysia, Mahanama Ralapanawa, said recent announcements by the Johor Waterfront City and Mersing Laguna developments, as well as the further expansion of Iskandar Malaysia, called for an urgent need for the government to migrate its develop strategy to instill sustainability.

"These vast developments spanning thousands of acres will have a huge environmental, social and resource impact.??"While major strides are being made in the building materials sector, irresponsible choices are still being made, in part due to a lack of awareness and cost considerations," he said in a statement on Friday.

Green certified buildings would provide a healthier indoor environment, he said. (Source: BERNAMA)
