Thailand’s largest cement company is scheduled to begin construction of a cement plant in Myanmar’s southern Tenasserim, Taninthayi Division next year, according to a report in Eleven Media.

“SCG [Siam Cement Group] is planning to manufacture its main products in Myanmar and willing to open four retail stores in Yangon, Mandalay Naypyitaw and one other major city,” said SCG’s country manager Soontornpol Veerapravati. “The plan is also to expand more stores in other cities in the future.”

SCG has sold and exported products to Myanmar for many years, the report said, adding that cement is currently in short supply in Myanmar with only 15 cement factories in the country. Myanmar’s government is presently granting more permits for building cement factories, it said.

At least 22Mta of the elephant-logo cement from SCG are imported to regional countries including Myanmar, Eleven Media said.
